  • Caffeine
  • Consuming under 200 milligrams of caffeine a day is essential to a healthy pregnancy. You may or may not already be aware that chocolate does contain some caffeine. About 1.5 ounces of milk chocolate has close to 9 milligrams of caffeine, and dark chocolate contains about 43 milligrams for the same amount. If you’re caving to your cravings, skip the soda and opt for a small piece of chocolate instead.

  • Sugar
  • Lower your risk of excessive pregnancy weight gain, gestational diabetes, and dental issues by limiting your sugar intake. Chocolate is typically high in sugar. For 1.5 ounces of milk chocolate, there is close to 23 grams of sugar, and for the same amount of dark chocolate, it adds up to about 18 grams of sugar. Consult with your doctor to know what a safe daily consumption of sugar is right for you.
